Welcome | Unwelcome is a series that features the welcome mat; a rectangular object placed at a threshold to denote movement from one space to another. They indicate a boundary. They are a signal of permission.
With this series, the welcome mat shifts away from the mundane and becomes a cast of characters engaged in a variety of experiences. Through reactionary gestures and postures, the welcome mat is anthropomorphized. The artworks reference a duality of strength and vulnerability, while communicating narratives of fragility, of boundary, and of circumstance.
When intimate encounters move from online to in-person spaces, is one truly welcome?
