Cindy Stelmackowich’s grandparents fled persecution in Ukraine during the Stalin regime at the turn of the century and settled on the Canadian prairies. Her mat reflects on the current war in Ukraine and its effects to the homeland of Ukrainians. Her intervention incorporates the instruments of war (airplanes, canons, tanks and guns), the human costs (soldiers), and hope through all the destruction in ultimate renewal (represented by the salvaged architectural tin in the shape of a gold medallion).
